ABOUT US

Teaching Africa Day goes beyond entertaining. Our mission is to provide the oftentimes omitted context and meaning behind many African traditions, such as African dance rituals, textile patterns, and fables. There is true genius in African traditions once we take the time to explore it. African culture & heritage are major contributors to every field of study, from agricultural sciences to government to architecture to philosophy, and everything in between. Who wouldn’t want to dive in and explore all that Africa has to offer? So we invite you to join us on this incredible journey of discovery!

The Concept

Teaching Africa Day is a day where Educators, Authors, Leaders, Artists, and the whole community share what we’ve learned from Africa, and African traditions. The best quality participants are selected to showcase a variety of resources available to teach and learn about classical and contemporary Africa….beyond the famous safari animals.

The Atmosphere

Our annual event has included guest speakers such as Senators, Mrs. Nicole Peacock, representing the State Department's Bureau of African Affairs, and Mr. Ikheola, Director of the Board of Education of Montgomery County. Our guest speakers read books aloud, tell stories, and speak to the significance of African culture in their lives to both entertain and inform our young and curious participants.

The Energy

In addition to our guest speakers, Teaching Africa Day features a variety of interactive and hands-on games, books, videos, and toys for children to explore. This level of interactivity is bound to create positive memories ensuring every child will be able to proudly proclaim appreciation for African culture. Everything from exploring the African version of Cinderella, to the traditional game of Mancala, to the weaving of colorful crafts, is designed to keep the day lighthearted and interactive for every child
